This trek takes you to Makalu Base Camp (5250 m), now designated as Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. Mt. Makalu (8463 m) is the fifth highest peak in the world. The Makalu Base camp trek is a true adventure with scenery so beautiful that it will never tire you. The trek starts with a flight to Tumlingtar and heads up the Aurn River valley to Sedua and Num, then crossing Shipton La Pass (4210 m) into the upper Barun river valley for a close look at Makalu and Chamlang Himal. This trek visits one of the most remote and unfrequented areas of Nepal. The Barun valley is a part of a huge international protected area under the agreement between the governments of Nepal and China, which comprises of 2330 sq. km of National Park and 830 sq. km of conservation area in Nepal alone.
We were not alone. Our organized trek had a crew of 15 to carry all of our food and gear for the long trip. Why so many people for just us two trekkers? That was just the way the Nepalese do things. The agency Nepal Vision www.nepalvisiontreks.com put everything together in just two days and we were on our way. The cost worked out to $44/day for each of us—a good deal as everything was included. It's nice to have someone carry your backpack on the steep and slippery trails, not to mention having a kitchen team fixing three cooked meals every day!
A view of Kangchenjunga rewards us when we crest the ridge. Now we turn south along the ridge toward trail's end at Basantapur, not far from our starting point of Hile
An Adventure Below Makalu
By sheer coincidence, Scotsman Donald Devine and I happened to arrive in Katmandu, Nepal, on November 4, 2000 with the thought of trekking to Makalu! We had trekked to Kangchenjunga two years before, then lost contact with each other. So we joined together again and set out on another 28-day epic, this time to Makalu—the world's fifth highest summit—located east of Everest. We were not alone. Our organized trek had a crew of 15 to carry all of our food and gear for the long trip. Why so many people for just us two trekkers? That was just the way the Nepalese do things. When is the best season? The best season for this trek is half of February to First week of June and September to early December. Half of February to First week of June: From the half of February until the first part of June temperatures are relatively warm, 10° to 15° warmer than in the fall. Mornings are bright and clear with the air slowly becoming hazier as the day progresses. The rhododendron forests in springtime are spectacular, with color displays that are "Himalayan" in beauty. June is warm and green with many fewer people - the sense of solitude is much greater than other seasons. September to half of December: September to early December is an ideal time for the best mountain views. The days are typically sunny and clear with moderate temperatures and the evenings are usually quite cold.
Short Description of Makalu TrekMakalu trekking in eastern Nepal is protected by the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Project. Established in 1992, it covers 2330 sq km. Among the 16 mountains in the park, it is home to Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world (8463m/ 27,766ft). The world's fifth highest mountain. Formerly a restricted area, it spans five major ecological zones where can be found the lush, tropical Arun Valley, dense forests or rhododendron and fir and alpine meadows that lead to the might Barun glacier. From the base camp, any one can view the spectacular Mt. Makalu. This mainly low altitude trek is centered on the Arun Valley, in eastern Nepal. The sub-tropical valley floor of the mighty Arun River is in places densely forested, contrasting with the terraced slopes higher up, which are farmed by villagers of diverse tribal groups. High pastures typify the upper slopes, which border on the Makalu-Barun National Park, an important conservation area for many threatened species. The trails rise from 850 meters (2,788ft) to 5000 meters (16,900ft) above sea level.
